Title: Integration of Touch interfaces with Displays: Why should we care?
Abstract: As touch takes over the user interfaces of personal computing, communication, and entertainment, sleek design and cost reductions are pushing integration of touch sensing with displays. There are many viable ways to achieve integration. Depending on the application, the 'best' designs could be in-cell, on-cell, discrete, or a hybrid combination.
This talk will provide an overview of Touch Sensing Technologies and specifically focus on sensing as a part of a complex system in a electronic device - where is (or should) the Sensor be and what Is (or should) the Sensor be made of.
Speaker Biography: Since 1996, Bob Mackey has been developing new technology in the flat panel display and touch sensing arenas. He joined Synaptics in 2002, developing a number of new touch sensing techniques, including the ClearPad transparent capacitive sensing platform, which is used in mobile phones, remote controls, and music/video players. Mackey holds more than thirty patents in the display and touch sensing fields. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Caltech and is a Hertz Fellowship recipient.

Title: Wearable Electronics: Near-Eye Light Field based Head Mounted Displays
Abstract: Head mounted and Near-eye displays that project images directly into a viewer's eye, have been gaining tremendous popularity over the past few years. Such displays confront a fundamental problem: the unaided human eye cannot accommodate (focus) on objects placed in close proximity.
This talk introduces a light-field-based approach to near-eye display that allows for dramatically thinner and lighter HMDs capable of depicting accurate accommodation, convergence, and binocular-disparity depth cues. Such near-eye light field displays depict sharp images from out-of-focus display elements by synthesizing light fields that correspond to virtual scenes located within the viewer's natural accommodation range. Building on related integral imaging displays and microlens-based light-field cameras, we optimize performance in the context of near-eye viewing. Near-eye light field displays support continuous accommodation of the eye throughout a finite depth of field; as a result, binocular configurations provide a means to address the accommodation convergence conflict that occurs with existing stereoscopic displays.
This talk will conclude with a demonstration featuring a binocular OLED-based prototype and a GPU-accelerated stereoscopic light field renderer

Speaker: Paul Semenza, Senior Vice President, Analyst Services, The NPD Group
Title: Active Matrix OLEDs: Across the Chasm?
Abstract: Active-matrix organic light-emitting-diode (AMOLED) displays have many attractive features that have led companies to attempt to manufacture them, but so far only Samsung Display has been able to move into mass manufacturing. Ambitious investment plans in China, Japan, and Taiwan could change this balance over the next several years, but there are many uncertainties with regard to the pace and ultimate impact of these investments. At the same time, AMOLED has been very successful in smartphones, but has had little impact in any other applications. Despite a great deal of excitement around the introduction of OLED TVs earlier this year, high costs and manufacturing challenges have limited production. In the market, AMOLED technology needs to compete with LCD, particularly with regard to price and high resolution performance, but has the best chance to enable truly flexible displays. This presentation will provide updates into the status of AMOLED manufacturing, describe some of the challenges and potential solutions, and present forecasts of the growth of AMOLED displays.

Speaker: Dr. Rahul Gupta, Senior Director of Business Development, Cambrios Technologies
Title: Enabling Flexible and Rollable Displays & Touchscreens
Abstract: Innovative device-makers have been developing flexible, curved, and 3D-shaped displays and touchscreens for years, but costly, brittle transparent conductive materials such as ceramic indium tin oxide (ITO) have limited the actual production of these devices. A new generation of ITO-alternative transparent conductive materials is emerging to advance the development of the flexible display and touchscreen markets. One such transparent conductor, Cambrios Technologies' ClearOhm material, is an inherently flexible silver nanowire-based material that improves yields and conforms fluidly to surfaces, allowing for truly flexible 2.5D or 3D-shaped products. In addition to enhanced durability and flexibility, ClearOhm coating material provides higher conductivity, improved optical transmission and better production yields. Rahul Gupta, senior director of business development for Cambrios, will discuss how ClearOhm is enabling high-performance OLED and epaper displays.
